Governance (2) (Alan)

Would be useful to have a list of thing to do in the domain of governance

Web page administartion

Workshops

Jonathan: i.e. when alan announces, is he doing it on behalf of biopax?

18:24 Emek joined

Berry Smith Workshop (4)

focus/goal: better understanding of biopax ontological issues.

Joanne: should it be a subgroup activity ?

Idea: define Barry Smith workshop and "exploration workshop". Outcome is a report ton the group.

Alan: ok

Exploratory workshop should be able to be organized by people proposing them.

The same for funding.

Alan:

Alan: expectation of reports but not decisions from these workshops

note: organizing an exploratory workshop could be a contribution from "outside" (get involved)

Gary: 1-3 is general for all workshops - #4 is a type of workshop

There should be a point of contact for organizing a workshop

Jonathan: please, each workshop should have a convener (holder of the lock / truth for this workshop) convener decides whether its snow date, etc

A workshop must have a resposnible to the rest of the group.

Wiki about a workshop should be endorsed ?

It is useful to endorse a page for documentation.

alan: Expectation is that workshop point of contact pulls in other interested people to help work on it

About Barry Smith biopax exploratory workshop:

alan: Will write announcement, send to admin list, wait 1-2 days. Then send to biopax list

Alan can send and announcement, others can contribute with reviewing.

Jonathan: hey, that was a delegation of authority!

minimum funds: 2k$ (about) (for the speaker, not for participants)

problems: 1) money on behaf of biopax ? 2) How to "manage" funds.

options: A) money to Alan's name. B) money to Sloan Kettering. C) Money to biopax bank account.

Jonathan: would we need taxpayer and employee identification numbers? also, biz account setup costs money (about $60 when I did it recently)

Gary: best option A, C can be critical (possible abuses)

Joanne: pro C.

Gary Bader: A is easiest administratively.

Gary Bader: There is risk in A and C

Jonathan: what about BPC? do they have a bank account? (BPC=biopathways consortium)

Gary Bader: Having an incorporated institution handle funds has the least risk

joanne: no, iscb holds their funds

science common ? complicated.

Joanne: and some of BPC money is currrently be held by MSKCC (the DOE funds)

Jonathan: no reason for alan not to open an account in the name of biopax (or biopax boston)

gary: did this for cytoscape and it was complicated

Joanne: which kind of complication ?

gary: formed a nonprofit, in order to open an account without risks

an account opened on behaf of participiants is risky.

Joanne: which risks "here" ?

Jonathan: question: what damages could be awarded by a court?

Alan temporary solution: open an account "biopax-boston" administred by him (taking risks).

Gary: no problem for an exploratory workshop. May not be legal under name of biopax

Andrea: fine for next workshop (pragmatics)

Jonathan: would biopax sue alan?... could they win? no, there's no trademark protection here

Will this work for fundings in next workshop ? (maybe constraints from the sponsors)

Ask Elgar.

Alan: Will decide whether to use personal or new account "biopax boston" to handle funds for this workshop. We will work on a more robust solution for future.

Ken: 18:58 i have to leave. good night.

Andrea: Maybe a biopax letterhead is needed.

Alan: yes

Jonathan: Let's let Alan figure out all these issues (letterhead, barriers to payment, etc)

Alan: that's my understanding.

Websiste update (5)

Emek Demir: 19:01 I have to leave too - sorry - have a lunch appointment..

Problem: the website doesn't look well.

Alan: beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Jonathan: why does web site need to look good? who are we trying to impress?

Andrea: Issues: main site is old.

Andrea: One possibility: use just the wiki.

Gary: Problem: looks bad.

Jonathan: why does it matter how it looks?

Alan: I second jonathan's question.

Alan: [WWW] http://fugo.sourceforge.net/

Alan: [WWW] http://obo.sourceforge.net/

alan: use "obo" style

Gary: not a small task need someone as a web developer.

Alan: [WWW] http://sbml.org/index.psp

sbml page is a good example.

Jonathan: i have made a moinmoin wiki that has the home page in the wiki (i.e. there is no string "/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/" cluttering the url). ... FYI

Idea: wiki with access lists for the front page.

Alan: first update content, then (if there are solutions) think about graphics.

Jonathan: OK, I gotta go. Have fun & I hope the skype chat persists even after i close it!

Andrea: outcome: andrea will propose some prototype solutions.
